NEWSLETTER June 2007
Thanet Council Elections
This was the first local country-wide election where UKIP was reasonably well represented and in total we achieved 200 000 votes from the electorate, this being double the votes achieved in any
similar election. This indicates very clearly that we are on the way up the ladder but major
successes will only be achieved by having more candidates involved with an added extra of a more
professional approach by all.
In Thanet, we fielded seven candidates with five of them being very close to being elected, these
being: Trevor Shonk - Central Harbour ward
Trevor Cooper - Cliftonville West ward
Martyn Heale - Northwood ward
George Jones - St. Peters ward
Bob Kirtley - Viking ward
For all those above, with more help from our membership in leaflet distribution and presence at the polling stations we would have had a better chance of success and last but not least, thanks are given to all you voters.
For any future election Nigel Farage and the NEC have recommended that in future, UKIP target those wards which have high volumes of retired people and in the next election for MEP’s, if UKIP were to double the present number we would have a powerful position in the EU Parliament
Discussion Evening
On the evening of Wednesday, 27 June 07 at 19.00 hrs. We intend holding a discussion evening at our offices in 158 King Street, Ramsgate, when members and non-members alike would discuss any subject they wish to air. One obvious subject relative to the progress of UKIP in Thanet, and that means North and South Thanet, would be tabled when the future could be discussed and that plus any other subject of interest put to the meeting, will be given air time.
Ideas from the membership on what we could be organising for office ‘get togethers’, such as game evenings over the next six months or so, OR, any outdoor activities would be particularly welcome.
With this newsletter we have included a reply slip and a prepaid envelope for your use and if you would be so kind as to return the slip to us in the prepaid envelope we will guarantee that you will
receive an honest and sensible reply. The small team who runs your local office thanks you for your continued support. Coffee or Tea and biscuits will be available at our meeting if you come along.
The EU
Tony Blair will be making his departure from office on the 27th. June to join all his cronies in the EU and just prior to that date at a meeting of EU Ministers he will be signing a document generally known as the EU Constitution, which to all intent and purposes, represents the handing over of our beloved sovereignty to the EU. It was supposed by the British public that such a decision to sign this document would be the result of a referendum agreed by a majority of the British public, but

Blair has decided that we are not capable of making such decisions especially when Blair has the
chance of being given a very senior position in the hierarchy of the EU. This is tantamount to treason.
General
At a meeting in Dorking on the 3rd June, Nigel Farage stressed how important it is for all branches
of UKIP to try to increase their efforts to gain more recognition in local and parliamentary elections. In this regard, we as your organising body in Thanet would like to extend a warm welcome to any members or non-members in both Thanet North and Thanet South to air a view or two on ideas for the future at the aforementioned meeting.
Being Fair to England
· Recognise the nonsense that laws which only affect England are being decided by votes from Scottish and Welsh MPs
· Keep the full Westminster parliament for making British law but one week in four use English MPs alone to determine law that only applies in England. This ‘English Parliament’ will have no extra MPs, buildings or bureaucrats.
Local democracy – independence for local decision making
Local councils rely on government funding and obey government orders rather than listening to those who pay the council tax. And more and more functions of councils including planning are being taken over by elected EU-inspired regional bodies.
Let local people call a binding referendum on any major local issue, such as planning schemes.
Dismantle regional government and return powers to county and borough councils
Reform ‘cabinet’ government for greater representation and transparency
Give local businesses a local vote as they pay local taxes but have no representation.
